Comply with Tyre Regulations
Baldoyle Auto Centre helps you follow auto tyre regulations in Dublin and meet vehicle standards required by the law. Compliance ensures that you and your passengers remain safe while in transit.
Auto tyre manufacturers are required to declare the external rolling noise performance, fuel efficiency and wet grip rating of the C1, C2 and C3 tyres they produce (these are used by passenger cars, as well as light and heavy-duty vehicles). Although manufacturers are diligent in disclosing this information, it still pays to work with an independent auto facility that will choose what’s best for your vehicle.
Baldoyle Auto Centre is a fully independent retailer, not affiliated with any particular manufacturer. You will receive unbiased, completely objective advice on the right tyre for your car. We also offer competitively priced car tyres in Dublin so you can get a high-quality fitting at cost-effective rates.
Signs Your Car Needs New Tyres
- The Treads Are Worn Down
In Dublin, the law requires auto tyres to have a minimum of 1.6mm tread across 75% of the wheel surface. It ensures that your car is safe for driving, even in wet conditions. Anything that exceeds this limit is considered unsafe and can potentially lead to accidents. You can buy a simple tread gauge to check the state of the tread. If it doesn’t meet the standards, have the wheels fitted with new tyres immediately.
Our mechanics, however, advise having your tyres checked if it dips below 3mm. This depth may cause longer braking distances. It’s better to have tyres replaced sooner rather than later.
- You Don’t Have the Right Tyre for Your Car
The law also requires a specific size and type of tyres for every Dublin law also forbids two different types of tyres on either side of your axle. If you are in doubt, you can ask us to check if your vehicle conforms to legal standards. Our mechanics have a wealth of knowledge, and we can tell you what needs to be done to ensure compliance.
- The Tyre Has Visible Sidewall Damage
If the sidewall has visible damage (like a bulge or cut), have them checked by our mechanics. Although small, sidewall damage increases the chances of tyre failure, which can lead to accidents. To ensure safety, book an appointment to fix sidewall damage.

Tyre FAQs
How often should my tyres be checked?
Ideally, tyres are checked once a month or before a long drive. The car owner inspects the air pressure, tread depth and overall condition of the tyres. If there are concerns, we advise booking an appointment with our mechanics.
Why is tread depth important?
Tread depth ensures the car will have a short braking distance, firmer grip and a lower risk of aquaplaning. Dublin law also requires auto tyres to have a tread depth of at least 1.6mm.
Why is proper tyre pressure important?
Proper tyre pressure enables road safety and prolongs the life of the tyre. If the tyre is under-inflated, the outer edges will experience premature wear, while the wheel rim is more vulnerable to damage. If the tyre is over-inflated, the centre of the tyre will experience premature wear. Incorrect tyre pressure also leads to irregular car behaviour, as the car will be difficult to handle.
In contrast, correct tyre pressure prevents accelerated wear and ensures the car runs as it should.
What causes irregular wear on the tyres?
Tyres experience regular wear because they are used on the road. However, some factors, such as improper tyre pressure, misaligned steering and minor mishaps, can cause the tyres to wear down faster.
How long can I expect my tyres last?
On the average, you’ll get 20,000 miles from your front tyres and 40,000 from the ones on the rear. There are, however, many factors that affect the service life of a tyre, like speed, pressure, wheel alignment and more.
