In the event of an accident you should obtain the following information:
- The names, contact details and vehicle details of all the parties involved.
- The insurance details including the policy numbers of all parties involved.
- Details of any witnesses or the names of a Garda who attended the accident.
- Do not admit responsibility at the scene.
You’re not allowed to withhold this information from another party involved in the motor accident. You should also take the contact details and driver’s license numbers of those who witnessed the car accident. Plus the name and number of the on-scene Garda.
Take Photographs of Car Accident
It’s a good idea to photograph the scene of the car accident and the damage to the vehicles concerned. Using your mobile phone or store a disposable camera in your glove box, photograph all vehicles involved capturing their position on the road and close ups of the damage sustained to all cars. If a camera is not available, find a piece of paper and document the same details pertaining to all vehicles.
A host of details may prove relevant and so should not be overlooked. The speed of the vehicles involved, width of the road and road markings, road surface, weather conditions, visibility, the manner of other’s driving. Note whether the other driver and passengers were wearing seat-belts.
Insurance Work
REMEMBER: You have the right to use the repairer of your choice. Your insurer may advise you to use their own Approved Repairer, but the final choice remains with you, the Policyholder. All Insurers have an obligation governed by the FSA to “treat customers fairly”. “
Know your rights
You are free to have your car repaired at the garage of your choice, no matter what your Insurance Company may advise. “It’s your car. It’s your choice.”.
Do not be unduly influenced by your Insurers suggestions of undue delays and extra costs. Such suggestions are not necessarily accurate. You are entitled to consider the benefits of dealing with the garage of your choice including the eventual trade-in value of your vehicle.
Remember, you are NOT obliged to have your vehicle repaired at an Insurance nominated garage.
