Regular oil service is crucial for maintaining the health of any car, especially newer models. While some manufacturers suggest that modern engines can go up to 30,000 km between oil changes due to advancements in oil technology and engine design, this can be risky for several reasons:

1. **Engine Longevity**: Oil lubricates the engine and prevents wear by reducing friction between moving parts. As oil degrades over time, it becomes less effective, leading to increased engine wear, which can reduce the lifespan of your car.

2. **Oil Contamination**: Even with synthetic oils, contaminants like dirt, metal particles, and combustion byproducts accumulate in the oil over time. These can harm the engine if not removed regularly. More frequent oil changes ensure that these contaminants don’t have time to cause damage.

3. **Driving Conditions**: The recommended interval of 30,000 km often assumes ideal driving conditions—consistent speeds, mild weather, and minimal stop-and-go traffic. However, most drivers experience more demanding conditions, such as short trips, frequent cold starts, or heavy loads, which accelerate oil degradation and make more frequent oil changes necessary.

4. **Turbocharged Engines**: Many newer cars are equipped with turbocharged engines, which operate at higher temperatures and pressures. These engines place greater demands on the oil, making it crucial to change the oil more frequently to prevent turbocharger and engine damage.

5. **Warranty Compliance**: If your car is still under warranty, following a shorter oil change interval may be required to keep the warranty valid. Failing to adhere to recommended maintenance can void your warranty.

6. **Resale Value**: Keeping a strict maintenance schedule, including regular oil changes, can help maintain your car’s resale value. Prospective buyers or dealers often view a well-documented maintenance history as a sign that the car has been well cared for.

While 30,000 km might be acceptable under specific conditions, many experts and mechanics recommend more frequent oil changes, typically every 10,000 to 15,000 km, depending on the car and driving habits. This ensures the engine stays well-lubricated, clean, and efficient, ultimately saving you money on repairs and extending the life of your vehicle.

What is a Ball Joint

Sometimes when we take our car to a garage for repair, the mechanic will tell us that the ball joint of the car is in bad shape. A lot of people do not know what a ball joint is and they just pay for the repairs. So it is important to have necessary knowledge about something for which you are paying for.

A Ball Joint

To connect the steering knuckle and the control arm, fundamentally helping as the central part between suspension and wheels. A spherical bearing is used which is also knows as a ball joint, this spherical bearing is comprised of a socket and stud walled in a casing. The ball joint is basically used to permit the movement through which you can have a relaxed drive on uneven surfaces.

As the ball joint provides control to the wheels, it can prove to be extremely dangerous if in bad shape because if the ball joint is in bad shape it can cause poor handling or in some cases complete loss of control. To check the condition of the ball joints listen to the rattling or knocking in your cars suspension. This can be an indication your ball joint is worn. Because your cars ball joints and also all parts of your suspension play a crucial roll in the safety of your car. Try to have them checked at your local garage every couple of months. This may only take a couple of minutes and could prevent a serious or fatal accident.

Shock absorbers, also known as shocks or dampers, are critical for a car’s safety. Like brake pads and other moving parts, shocks also wear out over time and need replacing. However, deciding WHEN to replace them can be tricky. The wearing out of shock absorbers depends on a number of vehicle usage factors, including the make of the vehicle, total driven mileage and surfaces the vehicle has been driven on. Following are six signs that your shock absorbers require replacement

Extended stopping distance
When shocks wear out, they mark about 20% increase in the stopping distance of a vehicle. We all know that speeding vehicles need a longer breaking time, worn shocks may prove fatal in this circumstance.

Deviation & dips
Another major sign is when your vehicle starts getting out of control when braking. If your vehicle seems to be deviating when you break, check your shocks for safety.

Vibration
When shocks are in optimal condition they keep the wheels in fine contact with the road. In this case, the steering wheel works smoothly. If the steering wheel vibrates, especially at high speeds, there is likely a chance that your shock absorbers are wearing out.

Slips & swings
This one is a very clever observation. If your car leaves its path on a straight road and you have to constantly correct it, these are your shock absorbers telling you that they need replacement.

Rattling
Vehicles go over bumps all the time and they do not necessarily rattle. Vehicles are designed to absorb these rattles and shock absorbers play a major role to help them do this. If your vehicle rattles over a bump giving you an uncomfortable drive, it is showing clear signs that your shocks are not doing their job right.

Wheel wear
Obviously, wheels wear out over a period of time, however, you need to check if they are wearing out in an uneven manner. If specific spots on your wheels are damaged more than the rest of it, your vehicle is not making proper road contact indicating necessary shock replacement.

Make a Note…
Worn out shock absorbers do not mean a vehicle cannot be driven. However, shock absorbers are very essential to your car’s functionality, especially when it comes to turns and brakes. Much like how changing the engine oil or keeping the water levels within the radiator is essential, shock absorbers play an integral role as well, to keep the performance of your vehicle at its best in order to minimize the damage in hazardous situations.

How Do I Know When I Need a New Clutch?

Clutches are engineered to resist the rigors of everyday driving. Depending on the type of vehicle and how it is driven, a clutch can serve drivers efficiently anywhere from 48,000 kilometres to 160,000 kilometres. Which brings us to the important question: what are the warning signs that your clutch needs repairing? soft, spongy feeling

If you drive your car every day, diagnosing issues with your clutch is easier than if you were to use your car sparingly. When your clutch starts feeling spongy or soft, and the feeling is more apparent when you release your clutch just before it catches, you can concur that an upgrade is due.

The clutch slips

One of tell-tale signs of a worn-out clutch in need of replacement is slippage. How do you know that your clutch is slipping? Mostly your clutch will slip. That means when you put it into gear and let go of the clutch the rpms don’t drop right away; instead they stay steady or rise, then drop.

What you can do is go about 8-15 kph, put your clutch in fifth gear, rev to about 4,000 rpm and drop the clutch. If the rpms don’t drop as soon as you let go of the clutch, then your clutch is slipping. If the rpms stay at 4,000 and drop off slowly, your clutch is slipping. But if your car’s rpms drop and your car dies, or tries to die then your clutch is fine.

Trouble changing gears

In an ideal situation, the gear change must be smooth. When your clutch is due for a replacement, it won’t be smooth and may shake quite a bit. These symptoms will be especially evident when reversing or moving into first gear.

A burning smell

When your clutch is failing, it is commonly accompanied by a burning smell. The smell comes from the friction of your slipping clutch.

An increasing biting point

As the clutch slips, the familiar biting point will change. When it fails, the biting point moves higher. The biting point of the clutch may be very high and at the extreme of the pedal travel as you lift the pedal up.

Visible damage

A vehicle’s clutch has a thrust bearing, the plate and the housing. If it is on its way out, make sure you change all three.

What to do if you put petrol in the tank of a diesel engine?

Do Not Turn On The Ignition.

Diesel is heavier than petrol, and much more oily. It needs pressure to be ignited and does not evaporate as petrol does. What happens after putting diesel on a tank is, diesel sank and injectors feed the engine a load of diesel. When you try to ignite the engine, spark plugs won’t be able to fire the diesel and the engine won’t start.

To fix the issue, draining the tank and filling it again with petrol, cleaning the injectors and finally cranking the engine to throw up the unwanted diesel would suffice. If fuel has entered the fuel lines it would be advisable to replace the fuel filter also just to be on the safe side.

Please do not start the engine or turn on the ignition as this will push the alien fuel through the system.

If this happens contact Baldoyle Auto Centre or your local mechanic and tell them the exact quantities and circumstances involved. If it’s only a small amount, they may reckon you will get away wit it but please be aware every case is different. The age and condition of the car, engine etc are crucial factors.

If it was a good few litres you will almost certainly have to get it drained – you have to balance the potential high cost of damage/repairs against the lesser price of draining the tank and flushing the system

The danger with petrol in diesel i that it reduces lubrication that can increase damage to the pump and injectors because you have more metal to metal contact.

Reminder no matter what do not turn on the ignition until you get advice from a mechanic that will give you time and expertise before any harm is done.

If you need advise we can be contacted at 018321045 and our workshop is based inside Baldoyle Industrial Estate in Dublin

Air conditioning is essential for your comfort and can contribute to your safety. Its main purpose is to provide a comfortable environment inside your car, regardless of the outside temperature.

However, if your air conditioning system has been switched off for a while, who knows what it could be hiding? Condensation in the pipework combined with heat from the engine creates a breeding ground for bacteria and mould. And its not just unpleasant odours you will have to suffer, your health could also be affected with sore throats, sneezing and irritated eyes

In addition, a vehicle that has an inefficient air conditioning system uses more fuel meaning its costlier to run

So why should you have your air conditioning checked?

If your air conditioning system isn’t checked and serviced regularly it can deteriorate, causing:

Increasing difficulty in maintaining a comfortable temperature

Musty or damp odours, as bacteria builds up inside the system

Windows steaming up when it is damp outside

An escape of refrigerant gas, leading to inefficient operation and increased fuel consumption

Baldoyle Auto Centre Recommends:

An annual check and treatment of your air conditioning system which will ensure optimum efficiency and inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause unpleasant odours.

The Braking System

Braking systems are complex and involve a number of different components, including

Brake Discs

The brake disc is a device for slowing or stopping the rotation of a wheel it is in motion

Brake discs are sensitive components and come under significant stress during braking

For your brake pads to work at maximum efficiency, your brake discs need to be in perfect working condition

If the disc is deeply scored, glazed, cracked or rusty, replace them immediately

You must always replace both discs on the same axle to avoid unequal braking

Baldoyle Auto Centre recommend that discs are checked each time the pads are changed

Brake Pads

The material which the pads are made from is softer than the discs and will therefore wear out more quickly

Worn pads can damage the brake disc

Have your brake pads replaced when the thickness of the material is worn down to 2mm

Brake pads should be replaced on both wheels on the same axle to prevent asymmetrical braking

Brake Drums and Shoes

This is another type of brake where the friction is caused by a set of brake shoes pressing against a rotating drum-shaped part called a brake drum

When brake drums are replaced, the brake shoes, wheel cylinders and springs should also be replaced because they are subjected to the same type of pressure as a brake pad

The brake shoes should be replaced as soon as the thickness of the lining is less than 1.5mm

Brake Fluid

Braking components are linked by a series of hoses and pipes containing brake fluid

Brake fluid is a vital part of the braking system and the vehicles anti-lock braking system

Over time, brake fluid deteriorates. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most overlooked vehicle fluids.

It should be regularly changed at least every two years to ensure that the braking system is not affected

If it falls below the MIN level in the reservoir (or if the brake warning light comes on), brake fluid should be added to the MAX level

If your brake fluid needs topping up regularly, you should have your braking system checked by Baldoyle Auto Centre for possible leaks

What are the warning signs there is a problem with my brakes?

The brake warning light comes on

If the brake fluid levels is too low or the pads are badly worn (The brake warning light also comes on when the handbrake is applied)

The brake pedal is stiff

If you have to press hard to the brake it may be caused by a failure in the servo assisted braking unit, hydraulic pipes, wheel cylinders or callipers.

The brake pedal is soft

If the brake pedal becomes “spongy” or has no resistance and you have to “pump” the pedal to brake, then its a clear sign that there is a serious fault in the hydraulic system

The car pulls to one side

If the car is pulling to one side it may be that a wheel cylinder or a calliper is seized up or quite simply a tyre may be under-inflated. Worn shock absorbers can cause the same effect.

The vehicle “judders” when braking

This indicates a problem with the discs, the linings or that one of the brake parts is loose or broken

Vibration

On braking, the brake pedal, steering wheel and sometimes the whole vehicle starts to vibrate: the brake discs are probably faulty, or there is a loose part or excessive play in the front or rear suspension.

If you experience any of the above, contact Baldoyle Auto Centre as soo as possible to arrange for them to check the condition of your braking system.

Important: even if you do not experience any of the above symptoms, you should ensure that your brakes are still regularly checked and maintained.

Baldoyle Auto Centre Recommends:

As braking components wear over time it is important to get your braking system checked and maintained on a regular basis

You get your brake fluid replaced every two years, normally this would happen at your vehicles scheduled service.

Dont forget that any braking system is only really effective with shock absorbers and tyres that are in good condition.

Your brakes are checked by professionals. Our technicians know your vehicles braking system inside out so you can be sure they will provide you with the right advise

Why are brakes so important?

The braking system is your vehicles most important safety feature, enabling you to slow down, stop and stop quickly in an emergency. Like all components, your brakes and braking performance will deteriorate over time, but because it happens gradually, many people may not notice the difference

It is a legal requirement that your braking system is performing correctly and your brakes will be tested as parts of your NCT. If the braking system is not up to standard your vehicle will fail.

It is therfore vital that your braking system is regularly checked and maintained to an optimum level, ensuring your vehicle is safe and to avoid potential costly repairs.

Timing Belts – Is it time to get yours changed?

The timing belt is a crucial part of your vehicles engine that controls the timing of its moving components, including the crankshaft, camshaft and valves. It is essential that it is not allowed to deteriorate.

Why get your timing belt checked?

To avoid expensive repair costs: If you timing belt breaks, your engines moving parts could collide, causing significant damage or possibly leading to a complete replacement engine

To avoid breakdowns: Even if the engine is not damaged, timing belt failure will lead to your vehicle breaking down

To avoid potentially dangerous accidents: If your timing belt fails while driving, it could cause a serious accident, especially at high speeds

The timing belt is made of a rubber-based compound, which means it can deteriorate over time due to general wear and tear.

It is essential that your timing belt is replaced in accordance with the manufacturers specifications. Please refer to your warranty and maintenance handbook.

Baldoyle Auto Centre Recommends:

Timing belts can fail without warning, so we recommend that it is checked regularly, in case of contamination or signs of wear and tear, particularly if the vehicle has been used in arduous conditions such as low mileage stop start journeys.

Get your timing belt regularly checked or you may face the expense of replacing your engine.

The replacement of a timing belt is a complex and labour intensive service requiring the use of specialist tooling. Speak to one of our Customer Advisers for pricing or to make a booking call 01-8321045
